Organization Founders

Contemporary Arts Inc. was co-founded by Carl and Barbara Harrell Grubbs in 1997 and became incorporated in the state of Maryland in 2002. The mission of the organization has been and continues to be the preservation and advancement of the jazz art form through performance and education.


Carl Grubbs is a saxophonist, educator, composer and international recording artist. He received the National Endowment for the Arts award twice, the Mary Sawyers Baker award in 2009 and the Ruby’s Arts award in 2014. Barbara Harrell Grubbs is a former educator and teacher/mentor, retiring from Baltimore City Public Schools after 29 years of service. Her skills as administrator, grants writer, record producer and arts presenter have been invaluable to Contemporary Arts Inc.

Mission Statement

The mission of Contemporary Arts Inc. is to preserve and advance the appreciation of the Jazz art form throughout the community through education and performance.  

The objectives under this mission are as follows:

Preserve Jazz, voted by the U.S. Congress, "America's National Treasure as an American Art Form".

Provide opportunities for education and entertainment to general audiences, musicians, students and other live music enthusiasts.

Focus on the educational, creative and artistic well-being of children and provide role models and opportunities for aspiring artists of all ages.

Collaborate with professional artists and other like-minded organizations regionally, nationally and internationally.

Expose the community to new exciting performing art programs.
